Standard rents, Premium buys (mostly)
Standard is $8.99 a month at Audible's regular US web price. You get one audiobook pick a month, and you can play it as long as you stay a member. That pick isn't a credit, and an unused one doesn't roll over to the next month. Cancel, and everything you picked locks once your final billing cycle ends. Books you paid cash for stay yours either way.
Premium, at $14.95 a month, is built around the credit. You get one a month, and it buys any eligible audiobook whatever the runtime. Anything you buy with credits stays in your library after you cancel. Audible is in the middle of renaming this plan from Premium Plus, so you may see both names. There's also the Plus Catalog, a rotating selection you can stream while you're a member and while a given title is still in rotation. Think of it as one shelf in the store.
Both prices kick in after any trial you qualify for, and both plans auto-renew. I think of Standard as a lease. Premium is a purchase with a streaming tier bolted on.
Pricing out Dungeon Crawler Carl Books 1–8
Dungeon Crawler Carl (DCC) is a good series to price out because there's a lot of it. On November 2, 2026, Audible's catalog data listed the regular English editions of Books 1 through 8 at 9,562 minutes. That's about 159.4 hours. Book 1 by itself is 13 hours 31 minutes. Each volume is a separate product, so on Premium it's one credit per book.
On the basic monthly Premium plan, you get one credit per billing cycle, so the eight separate volumes take eight cycles at $14.95. That adds up to $119.60 before tax, paid a month at a time, and I didn't count any trial or promo. It's an illustration of that plan. You can also get to eight credits with an annual plan or by buying extra credits, and none of this assumes any volume is in the Plus Catalog.
It may not be your cheapest route, either. The annual plans bill upfront, $149.50 for 12 credits or $229.50 for 24. Spend every credit and that works out to about $12.46 or $9.56 apiece. A cash sale or an eligible Add Narration price on one volume can also come in under a credit.
Standard doesn't get its own version of this math. Its picks aren't yours to keep, so there's no cost of ownership to work out. The full lineup is on the Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order page.
Check the cash and Add Narration prices first
On monthly Premium, a credit costs you $14.95. If a book's listed cash price is lower than that, pay cash and save the credit for something pricier.
Kindle readers have one more thing to check. Read & Listen, which used to be called Whispersync for Voice, pairs a Kindle ebook with its Audible narration, but only when the two are matching versions. Pull up the exact Kindle edition you'd get. It may say narration is included, or it may show an Add Narration price. Count what the ebook costs you too, or your Kindle Unlimited bill if that's how you'd read it, and then compare the total with a credit. Kindle Unlimited won't get you into Audible's whole catalog, by the way. Narration varies by title.
One gotcha with returns. If you return a companion ebook you bought, the discounted narration can get refunded and removed along with it. That rule is about purchased ebooks. A Kindle Unlimited loan ending is a different case, and I wouldn't assume it plays out the same way.
Before you spend anything, run your shortlist through the credit optimizer to see which books are worth a credit.
When Spotify or your library is the better call
Spotify gives eligible Premium subscribers 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from its subscriber catalog. Whether you qualify depends on your plan and on whether you're the one paying the bill. Included hours you don't use expire each month, and if you run out, there are 10-hour top-ups and a 15-hour add-on. On paper, one book the length of DCC Book 1 fits inside a month's hours.
The catalog is the problem. For this guide I didn't confirm that any specific LitRPG title is on Spotify, DCC included. Even if all eight books were there, 159.4 hours is more than ten months of included listening.
Libby and Hoopla are free if your library participates. Which titles and editions you'll find, how long holds take, and how many loans you get all come down to your library. Searching costs nothing, so I'd look there before paying anybody.
Don't min-max hours per credit
Hours per credit is a fun stat to optimize. I just wouldn't subscribe over it. The DCC math above comes out to roughly 75 cents per listening hour, and sure, that looks great in a spreadsheet. Now picture bailing on a 30-hour book at hour four. You spent a whole credit on four hours.
So try Book 1 before you commit to eight. Borrow it, pay cash, or spend one credit, then decide. If it hooks you, the series roadmap covers getting through long series efficiently, and books like Dungeon Crawler Carl is there for when you're caught up and need something else in the queue.
Plan your exit, too. Web-issued credits have a 12-month TTL, and canceling wipes out any you haven't used, so spend them first. Credits from the App Store or Google Play follow different rules, and Audible says those don't expire. On Standard, finish what you're listening to before your final billing cycle ends.
So is Audible worth it for you?
For a long series you want to keep, I'd pay for Premium, and that goes double if you re-listen to everything before each new release. Credits don't care how long a book is, and what you buy with them stays after you cancel.
Standard is the cheaper monthly bill. It works if you listen once and move on, one pick a month keeps up with you, and you're okay losing those picks when you stop paying.
Still just LitRPG-curious? Check the library and the cash price before signing up for anything. And if you've had a membership before, look at the current returning-member terms. An old offer may not apply anymore.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Audible Standard or Premium better for a long LitRPG series?
Premium, if you want to keep the books. Each monthly credit buys any eligible audiobook no matter how long it is, and credit purchases stay in your library after you cancel. Standard is cheaper, $8.99 a month against $14.95, but it gives you one pick a month instead of a credit. Unused picks don't roll over, and your picks lock after your final billing cycle if you cancel.
What would Dungeon Crawler Carl Books 1–8 cost with Audible credits?
In the regular English editions, Books 1–8 are eight separate volumes adding up to 159.4 hours, so you'd need eight credits. On monthly Premium that's eight regular $14.95 billing cycles, or $119.60 before tax, with trials and promos left out. You'd pay it over eight cycles, so treat it as an illustration rather than a bundle price. An annual plan, cash sales, or an eligible Add Narration price can bring it down.
Do I keep my Audible books if I cancel?
Yes, for anything you bought with credits or cash. Standard picks lock when your final billing cycle ends, and Plus Catalog access goes away with your membership. Unused web-issued credits expire when you cancel. Credits from the App Store or Google Play follow different rules, so check where yours came from first.
Is Spotify or the library a good alternative to Audible for LitRPG?
For sampling, sure. Eligible Spotify Premium subscribers get 15 audiobook hours a month, and unused hours expire, so that won't get you far into a 159.4-hour series. Libby and Hoopla are free through a participating library, but titles, holds, and limits depend on your library. Neither is guaranteed to have the series you're after, so search before you plan around it.

How We Review: This guide is built from published terms and catalog data. No one took a trial, bought anything, or ran a listening test for it, so read it as research rather than a hands-on review. The Dungeon Crawler Carl runtimes are the regular English editions of Books 1–8 as listed in Audible's catalog API on November 2, 2026. The $119.60 figure is eight regular $14.95 monthly Premium billing cycles before tax, with trials and promotions excluded. The per-hour and annual per-credit numbers are plain division.
