The Mark's design is the clever part: it sabotages his combat magic but turbo-charges mundane skill learning, so Alex progresses through workarounds — potions, golems, planning, and cheese strats no properly Marked Hero would ever need. Found-family warmth plus academy structure plus a ten-million-view Royal Road pedigree, and book one's pacing is about as good as the genre gets. Honest caveat: later volumes slow down and repeat, and Alex's lack of direct offense starts charming and gets frustrating.
